What to Expect When Getting Started With Therapy
What to Expect When Getting Started With Therapy
Reaching out to a therapist can feel surprisingly intimidating, especially when you aren't quite sure what happens after you hit "send." I want getting started to feel as simple and low-pressure as possible.
Step 1: Reach Out
You can start by filling out the contact form on my website. You don't need to have the perfect explanation for why you're looking for therapy. A few sentences about what you're hoping for support with is plenty.
I'll follow up with you to answer any initial questions and schedule a free 15-minute consultation.
Step 2: Your Free 15-Minute Consultation
The consultation is a short, informal conversation where we can get a sense of whether working together might be a good fit.
I'll ask a little about what is bringing you to therapy, what you're hoping to work on, and what you're looking for in a therapist. This is also your chance to ask me questions about my approach, scheduling, insurance, rates, or anything else you're wondering about.
You don't need to tell me your entire story during the consultation. Especially if you're reaching out about trauma or something difficult you've experienced, you get to decide what you're comfortable sharing and when.
Step 3: Deciding If We're a Good Fit
Therapy works best when you feel comfortable with the person sitting across from you. A consultation isn't a commitment to start therapy, and I want you to have the information you need to decide whether I feel like the right therapist for you.
If we decide to move forward, we'll find a time for your first appointment and I'll send you the paperwork you'll need to complete beforehand.
Step 4: Your First Therapy Session
Your first full session gives us more time to talk about what has been going on, what's important to you, and what you'd like to get out of therapy.
You don't need to arrive with everything figured out. We'll take it from there together.
Ready to Get Started?
If you've been thinking about therapy but keep putting off reaching out, you don't have to know exactly what to say. Send me a message, and we'll start with a conversation.
